Humor: Singlish
Here is a short You-tube clip that came to my mind when I was trying to relax myself after a stressful brainstorming session at work two days ago. I thought it would be nice to share it with my readers. It’s all about Singapore Vernacular English, commonly known as Singlish.
The vocabulary of Singlish consists of words originating from English, Malay, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi and to a lesser extent various other European, Indic and Sinitic languages, while Singlish syntax resembles southern varieties of Chinese.
Despite the great discouragement of the use of Singlish in favor of formal “official” English, many Singaporeans, today, still enjoy speaking Singlish, including myself.
In the following, there are three sentences which literally mean the same thing. The first sentence is categorized as the highest-class form of speech, used by the well-educated in formal situations. The second sentence is, however, more middle-class which is used in formal and semi-formal situations. The third, the colloquial speech, is used by almost everyone in working-class urban neighborhoods (educated or not) in informal settings, and is the speech we usually referred to as the English dialect, “Singlish”.
- This person’s Singlish is very good.
- Dis guy Singlish damn powerful one leh.
- Dis guy Singrish si beh powderful sia.
Enough with all the information about Singlish, let’s sit back and enjoy the conversation between our national radio DJ with an unknown food caterer/supplier.
In fact, there is an uncle selling fried rice in the food market near my office often asks us, “u wan fly rice?”

Nice work man. I found you on google!
I know this might not be the most appropriate place to post this but for other readers living in the USA are you concerned about the debt? It just seems like it is getting to the point where the country is going to go bankrupt and my husband and I are just a little concerned that our kids and grandkids are going to have some big problems in a few years. Thanks for letting me vent, Sara
Mother: Did you get a good place in the geography test?Fred: Yes, Mum, I sat next to the cleverest kid in the class.
