Watami Restaurant @ ION Orchard, Singapore

April 16th, 2012 10 Commented

Wifey is back and has completed her dissertation. Now, she is craving for food… buffet, dessert, etc, more than ever. LOL! :D We decided to have a decent, yet not too lavish kind of lunch in ION Orchard last Sunday. There are so many restaurants and one can really be spoilt for choice.

It was before noon and all the dim-sum serving Chinese restaurants were teemed with dragon lines at the reception. So we decided to patronize a restaurant that had the shortest queue – Watami, a Japanese casual restaurant.

We looked through the menu and… Wow! They have quite a huge selection of food. After browsing through the menu, we decided to go for the Special Set for 2 as its has a good variety at an affordable price.

The Salmon Sashimi was served first. We were taken aback when we saw the sashimi. How could it look so dull? I mean, look at the photograph. It was beautifully garnished but the sashimi didn’t look as fresh. Where is the vibrant gleaming looking sashimi that we crave for? But to our surprise, it tasted fresh and succulent, even better than many of the sashimi we had out before. So… could it be a lighting issue?

The next item on the menu was the Half Watami Salad, it contains a healthy mix of 7 kinds of vegetables. Topped with their special tuna mayonnaise, I must admit that it tasted great. They also boasted that this dish is a must-have for those who are on a healthy diet! Well, I’m glad that they included it in the set.

We were surprised that the set meal actually comes with two side dishes. Nice! More to eat! :D But seriously, we didn’t notice it. I believe the prints on the menu are not obvious or eye-catchy. Our first choice was the Kaki Fried, a Japanese term used for deep fried oysters served with julienned cabbage on the side. I’m pretty satisfied with them. They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

We chose Chicken Katsu as our second side dish. I enjoyed the taste of the sweet, tender chicken with its crispy breadcrumbs. However, after leaving the chicken to soak with the egg in the pot, the breadcrumbs turned soft which I didn’t fancy at all.

The Salmon Gohan was a much anticipated dish by wifey. The salmon and ebiko (shrimp roe) looked great. Unfortunately, the dish didn’t shine as expected. The Korean’s bibimbap tastes way better. In my opinion, the problem lies in the rice. It didn’t taste good.

The Beef Sukiyaki Nabe is one of the chef’s recommended dishes. The tender beef slices and garnished vegetables were cooked in their rich flavored soup. Savoring the beef and soup is a bliss. The generous amount of Chinese cabbage and enoki mushrooms made my day. As a beef lover, I’m pleased with this dish.

In conclusion, I consider this meal a value for money. With only $59SGD (excluding service charge and GST), you can enjoy a restaurant-dining-experience with a good selection of food variety. The food was great apart from the Salmon Gohan. Also, if you and your friends are small eaters, you can save more by sharing this set meal that can definitely feed more than two persons. No doubt, it’s definitely worth a try.

Hi there ^^Yay another cool food post, nice to have you back.

Chicken Katsu would be something I would like to eat.
Beef Sukiyaki Nabe also looks delicious, was the beef partially raw?

It’s great to see you again Fabienne!
LOL! I’d not dare to eat the beef if it has anything to do with the word ‘raw’. The photo was taken before the fire was lighted. After that, I poured the well-beaten egg into the soup and the nice layout of the beef and vegetables would have been messed up by me already. :D

I tend to stay away from Ion orchard or actually orchard road for food but given the fact you seemed to have enjoyed it and its value for meal then Ill give it a shot When I come back :3

Thank you Fabrice. I’m going to try hard to be more pro-active in updating. And you, should really look around in ION. They really have lots of nice food there. However, I think those at the higher floors can be costly. Just be aware. :D

Oh you’re back! And yay for another food post! ^^
I should have checked out ION when we visited SG.

Now I’m craving for some sukiyaki.

There are many restaurants in ION. And most of the crowds have actually shifted there.

As for me, I’ll try to be more active since I’ve not been updating in a while. Probably will go with travel and food then will try to post some on figures. Many of them are still sleeping in the box which is a good thing because the dust got onto the box and not them :D

Wow, the food looks delicious, even if it might not have tastes so. The Salmon Gohan looks the most appealing to me.
